Tattoo placement guide

Shoulder tattoo placement

The shoulder cap is a padded, relatively low-pain placement that can work as a standalone tattoo or the top of a sleeve. Its rounded surface rewards designs built around the deltoid rather than flat artwork placed across it.

These are estimated guides, not measurements. Pain, healing and ageing vary by person, technique and aftercare.

What works here

Styles: illustrative, blackwork, traditional, floral.

Useful size and shape

Small through large designs can use the deltoid cap. Centre the main mass on the broad outer curve and let secondary shapes taper toward the collarbone, upper arm and shoulder blade instead of ending abruptly at those transitions.

The rounded outer shoulder is generally a lower-pain area; sensitivity often increases toward the more prominent bony landmarks near the collarbone.

Placement geometry

Style geometry

Illustrative, blackwork, traditional and floral work can follow the rounded cap well. Circular or radiating compositions can use the shoulder shape directly, while portraits need enough scale to keep key features on a readable plane.

Transitions and edges

The shoulder connects naturally into the outer upper arm, collarbone and shoulder blade. Leave adaptable edges if future chest, back or sleeve work is likely.

Rotation

Check the stencil with the arm relaxed at the side. Raising or rotating the arm changes the deltoid shape substantially, so use the neutral standing position as the main reading state.

How it tends to age

Long-term fading on the shoulder depends mainly on UV exposure, healing quality and placement-specific stretch rather than ordinary arm movement itself. Movement still changes how the design reads across the deltoid, so very rigid fine detail near the collarbone or arm crease needs careful placement.

Pain and fade are separate ratings. Read the methodology on How it works.

The shoulder is a junction between outer upper arm, collarbone and shoulder blade, so its edge treatment can determine whether future sleeve, chest or back work connects naturally.
